Günther Kratzel

Günther Friedrich Kratzel (born December 23, 1925 in Hindenburg OS ) is a German professor of Slavic studies and Eastern European scholar at the University of Hamburg .

Life and work

Kratzel initially taught Russian language and literature as part of a lectorate, but later moved his teaching activities to Slavic intellectual history until his retirement in 1987. In the course of several Nazi trials in the 1970s and 1980s, he also worked as an interpreter for German judicial delegations.

Furthermore, Kratzel devoted himself to non-university political lectures in order to educate the public about the dictatorship of the Soviet Union.
