The GATX ( GATX ) is a US-based leasing company for rail vehicles , based in Chicago . GATX was founded in 1898 and has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange since 1916 .

Originally the abbreviation for the company was "GAT". The letter "X" in the company name comes from the fact that the reporting mark for North American rail vehicles ends with an "X" if they are not owned by a railway company .

history

In 1994 GATX acquired a minority stake of 37.5 percent in the Swiss freight car rental company AAE , which at that time had a stock of 2,500 wagons. After the number of wagons had increased continuously to 30,000 after 19 years, AAE bought back the GATX stake in AAE Cargo in September 2013. As a result, the company in Europe is concentrating on its own subsidiary there.
