GIAT 30
The GIAT 30 is a series of 30-mm - machine guns , which the DEFA 550 series in French combat aircraft to replace. The gun was developed by the French company GIAT (now Nexter ).
The GIAT 30 is a single-barreled revolver gun with electric ignition that was developed in the 1980s and introduced into the French armed forces from 2000. The weapon is a conventional gas pressure gun .
Two versions of the GIAT 30 are produced:
- The GIAT 30 M781 is intended for use in fixed- mount combat helicopters , in weapon containers and in turrets . The weapon is constructed in such a way that the same 30 mm cartridge as in the DEFA cannon with a projectile weight of 244 g for HEI projectiles (High Explosive Incendiary) and 270 g for APHEI SD projectiles (Armor Piercing High Explosive Incendiary ) can be used. Due to the relatively high recoil , the weapon is normally only operated in a single shot or in short bursts and not in continuous fire.
- The GIAT 30 M791 is intended for use in combat aircraft such as the Dassault Rafale . It has a selectable rate of 300, 600, 1500 to 2500 rounds per minute and can be operated in short bursts of 0.5 to 1 seconds as well as in continuous fire. Various 30 mm × 150 mm ammunition types are fired.
