GMRP
GARP Multicast Registration Protocol (GMRP) is a sub- protocol of the Generic Attribute Registration Protocol ( GARP ) that deals with the management of multicast connections. GMRP is standardized in IEEE 802.1p and allows Ethernet hosts and switches to control the forwarding of multicast messages on OSI layer 2.
GMRP is a Layer 2 - network protocol , making it MAC treated -Multicasts. A host signs in or out for a multicast address. The managing switch forwards corresponding multicasts to it or not accordingly. This reduces the spread of multicasts, which reduces the network load.
