GNUPedia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

GNUPedia (later renamed GNE ) was a project to create a free encyclopedia licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License and overseen by the Free Software Foundation . It has since been discontinued.

The project was proposed by Richard Stallman in 1999 and finally started in January 2001, moderated by Héctor Facundo Arena . Shortly after the start, there was confusion about the similar-sounding name of the project for Nupedia , which had previously been started by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger . In addition, it was unclear whether there would be a breakdown of the free encyclopedias. In addition, Wales had owned the domain name gnupedia.org .

GNUPedia contributors often noticed editorial control and bureaucratic difficulties as soon as they wanted to contribute to Nupedia. A key question for GNUPedia was to what extent editorial action would be necessary to initiate participation in the project. At the same time, Wales started the Wikipedia project and asked the GNUPedia community to join.

Wikipedia was accepted with great enthusiasm by GNUPedia supporters and soon overtook the two original projects. GNUPedia continued to exist, but renamed itself to GNE because of the naming controversy with Nupedia . The abbreviation GNE is also a recursive acronym and means "GNE is Not an Encyclopedia" . As a result, the goals of the GNE were redefined; it should be an extensive knowledge base . The name change did not contribute significantly to the success of the project and work on it decreased. Richard Stallman has been supporting Wikipedia ever since.
