GNU Social is free software for social communication that implements the OStatus standard for communication between microblogging services.

StatusNet became part of GNU Social in 2013 after the two projects had already shared a common code base for a while. The Free Social project was also merged into GNU Social at this point. The approach of the software is decentralized and due to the free license companies and private individuals can install their own servers and connect them to the worldwide network or operate them locally. No ads will be served on GNU Social .

Popular "GNU Social" instances are listed on gnu.io.

At the beginning of April 2017, some compatible instances, especially mastodon.social , based on the alternative implementation Mastodon became better known.
