StatusNet (formerly Laconica ) is free software developed in PHP for microblogging services that implements the OStatus standard (formerly: OpenMicroBlogging). StatusNet enables open communication between online communities with functionality comparable to Twitter .

Companies and private individuals can install their own server and thus also control their services and data in their local networks , whereby microblogging can be used within the company. In contrast to Twitter, an open and decentralized structure is built. In addition, StatusNet offers the possibility that users can communicate across different servers.

The once popular StatusNet service identi.ca (around 200,000 hits in March 2010.) left in 2013 the StatusNet and switched to the newly developed but incompatible software pump.io .

In June 2013, the StatusNet and Free Social projects were merged with the GNU Social project .

In 2016, current GNUsocial and StatusNet instances frequented by high numbers of users are for example: quitter.se, loadaverage.org, quitter.es, status.vinilox.eu, quitter.is, gnusocial.de, quitter.no, status. pirati.ca, micro.fragdev.com, indy.im.
