GNUmed is a free electronic medical record for unixoides systems (such. As BSD , Linux and Unix ), Microsoft Windows , Mac OS X and other platforms. GNUmed aims to offer medical software that respects patient privacy and is based on open standards .

history

The first version of GNUmed was created by Horst Herb. When Herb let the development run, it was taken over by Karsten Hilbert, he also became a project manager and overhauled some parts of the project software.

Karsten Hilbert was not alone in his efforts. Many different developers joined the development team and helped from time to time, to mention here are: Syan Tan, Ian Haywood, Hilmar Berger, Sebastian Hilbert, Carlos Moro, Michael Bonert, Richard Terry, Tony Lembke and many more. While a few concentrated on programming, many others (such as Jum Busser and Rogerio Luz Coelho) helped with the creation of the documentation and translations.

The name was originally chosen to pay tribute to the GNU project and to show the connection between GNUmed and medicine. The logo shows a Gnu , as a reference to the GNU project, accompanied by a Python , as a reference to the programming language of the same name, and as an allusion to the staff of Aesculapius, which is used as a logo in medicine.

Technical implementation

GNUmed is based on the DBMS and PostgreSQL projects and is almost exclusively written in Python . The graphical user interface of the software is based on WxPython .

use

GNUmed is primarily used for electronic health records. However, it also provides a means of archiving record documents and collecting metadata about these records.

Furnishing

GNUmed supports a variety of features, many of which are implemented as plug- ins that extend the core functionality of the program. These range from medical record archives to vaccination status processing. A full list of all features can be found in the GNUmed documentation system.

The wiki includes a section called “WhatCanIActuallyDOWithGNUmedToday” (German “What I can actually do with GNUmed today”), which gives a larger overview on this topic. Each release adds more features.
