The German Unix User Group (GUUG) is a registered association , the purpose of which is to promote scientific research, technical development and communication of open computer systems, especially in connection with Unix-like operating systems and associated software.

Publications as well as lectures and conference events serve this purpose in particular .

The GUUG currently organizes the annual spring technical discussion , which is aimed at professional system and network administrators, IT security experts and Unix developers .

The GUUG also organized the Linux Congress (1994–2010), the Open Systems Conference Fair (-1998), the Free Software / Open Source Telephony Summit (2004–2006), the OpenSolaris Developer Conference (2007–2009) and the European Conference on Applied IPv6 (2007) and the International Conference on LDAP (2007, then organized by other organizers every two years).

There are regular local meetings in various urban centers.

The GUUG publishes the online magazine UpTimes twice a year with specialist articles on current IT topics.
