Gabriel's Gully is the location of a former gold mining area in the Otago regionon the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

Gabriel's Gully is located about three kilometers north of Lawrence near the Tuapeka River .

history

Gold was found in Gabriel's Gully by Thomas Gabriel Read on May 25, 1861 . The Pick an Shovel Monument commemorates this event on site. The gold discovery triggered the gold rush in Otago . The population of the previously almost uninhabited gold field rose to 11,500 in one year. This was twice the population of Dunedin at the time .

In 1879 the process of hydraulic mining developed in California, called " sluicing " in New Zealand , was introduced, in which gold-bearing sediments are removed by a water jet. The floor of the valley was raised about 50 meters through the spoil.

Sightseeing

From Lawrence today there is an 8.5 km long circular hiking trail, the Gabriel's Gully Round Trip, through the former gold mining area. A viewing platform provides a view of the abandoned Blue Spur gold rush settlement . 14 information boards provide information about the history of the area.
