Gabriel Bernardino

Gabriel Rodrigo Ribeiro Tavares Bernardino (* 1964 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese mathematician . In January 2011 he was elected as the first chairman of the newly created European Supervisory Authority for Insurance and Company Pensions ( EIOPA ).

Professional background

Bernardino studied at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa , where he graduated with a Master of Science in applied mathematics as well as statistics and optimization.

Bernardino then worked for the Portuguese insurance regulator ISP . He particularly appeared in the context of the drafting and consultations on Solvency II . During the Portuguese EU Presidency , he chaired the Council working group that dealt with Pillars 2 and 3 of the approach. In 2009 he took over the full-time chairmanship of the Committee of the European Supervisory Authorities for Insurance and Occupational Pensions ( CEIOPS ) and was subsequently elected as the first chairman of the supervisory authority when the committee was replaced by an authority in January 2011. In 2015 he was confirmed by the European Parliament for a second term, starting on March 1, 2016. His term of office is five years.
