Gachalá emerald

At 858 carats (171.6 g), the Gachala is one of the largest emeralds in the world.

Gachala (English Gachala Emerald ) is the name of a 858 carat (171.6 g) uncut emerald . The specimen was discovered in 1967 in the Vega de San Juan mine in Colombia . It is named after the mining district in which it was found. The stone, which is now in the United States, is five centimeters long and, like the Hope Diamond on November 8, 1958 , was given to the Smithsonian Institution by New York jeweler Harry Winston .
