Gâche de Vendée.

The Gâche de Vendée is a culinary specialty from the Vendée department in France . It is a yeast pastry in a round bread shape, similar to the brioche , but not quite as airy. Its main ingredients are wheat flour, eggs, butter, sugar, crème fraîche and yeast .

Anecdotes about the creation

The history of the Gâche goes back to the Middle Ages. Originally, a failed brioche was called a gâche (from the French word gâcher for failure or spoil). Little by little, the shape established itself and so this pastry was traditionally made in the families of the Vendée before festive days, especially Easter. After the bakery trade gradually established itself in the 19th century, the recipes were further refined and adapted to the new possibilities. Today the gâche is a popular traditional product that no bakery in the Vendée is missing. A blind tasting is held annually in the Vendée to award the best gâche.

Available outside of France

The Gâche is now also partially available in Germany, for example it has been offered at least sporadically by some discounters since autumn 2006 .

A similar specialty, but less well known, is the Gâche de Normandie from the French region of Normandy .
