Gachi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gachi , also gatchi, gashi, kashi or gaishi, is a long, slender natural trumpet made of metal among the ethnic groups around Lake Chad in Chad , the Kanuri in Nigeria and the Fulbe in northern Cameroon . The gachi is one of the long trumpets used in the ceremonial music of traditional Islamic rulers, known in West Africa by the most widespread name kakaki .

The trumpet is usually made from sheet metal, partly from brass . It is over two meters long and consists of two parts that are plugged into each other for use and otherwise transported separately. The pipe consists of various connection pieces: The horn with a diameter of around 10 cm is soldered to the central cylinder of the borehole (15 to 25 mm diameter). Another conical part with a rim about 7 mm wide completes the tube to form the mouthpiece.

The instrument produces two tones at the same time with a distance of a fifth .
