The Gaewern Slate Mine is an abandoned mine in North Wales , made famous by Urbexing and known there as the Cavern of the Lost Souls . It is located southeast of Corris Uchaf on the Corris road in Gwynedd . In it was black shales won. It was operated by the Merionethshire Slate Company in the first half of the 19th century. In 1873 200 people were employed. It was later consolidated with the Braich Goch Slate Mine .

A quarry is located in a large underground hall that is filled with water in the lower area. A lot of scrap metal was brought into the mine through a shaft about 70 m deep. The hall had been used as a garbage dump for a while by the local council. Old cars, refrigerators, old televisions and other household items were tipped through a shaft into the hall, piling up in front of and under the water.
