Gail Davies
Gail Davies (* 5. June 1948 in Broken Bow , Oklahoma as Patricia Gail Dickerson ), American country singer-songwriter.
Beginnings
As the daughter of country singer Tex Dickerson , Gail came into contact with music from an early age. She started out as a rock singer, switched to jazz and returned to country music in the early 1970s. She had to take some time off because of vocal cord problems. Without further ado, she decided to write songs and bought her first guitar.
Career
She moved to Nashville and worked for a music publisher there. In 1978 she landed her first hit song with her composition "Bucket To The South", recorded by Ava Barber. Lynn Anderson and others also covered this song. Gail's fame in the country scene grew, and so she got her first record deal that same year. Her debut LP and several of the singles released reached single-digit positions in the country charts; Her first top ten placement came in 1980 with "I'll Be There". Gail Davies' most played songs on the radio were "Somebody's Looking for Someone Like You" (which was covered in several foreign languages, including by Nana Mouskouri) and especially "Grandma's Song", her best-known song. Notably, she has been a producer on practically all of her releases. From 1980 to 1983 Gail Davies released one LP per year with Warner Brothers, all "Produced by Gail Davies", but the hit parade placements increasingly fell short of expectations (and behind previous successes).
In 1984 Gail Davies changed the label. But at RCA , too , she was unable to build on her earlier successes. She founded the group "Wild Choir" and acted there as lead singer. As there was no commercial success here either, she soon tried again as a solo singer, this time with MCA. After all, Davies, who was considered a tough and clever negotiator, worked as a producer on the Liberty label. In 1995 she founded her own record company "Little Chickadee Records". Gail Davies is considered one of the most influential women in country music.
