The Gainesville Park is a triangular, historic park in the city of Gainesville in the US state of Alabama . It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since October 29, 1985 with the number 85002929 .

location

The park is located about 150 meters southwest of the Tombigbee River at the north end of historic downtown Gainesville. It is delimited to the south by Washington Street, to the west by an extension of State Street ( Alabama State Route 116 ) and to the east by McKee Street ( Alabama State Route 39 ).

description

The triangular park measures around 29 × 46 × 34 meters and is enclosed by a low iron fence. A wide opening to the south provides access from Washington Street.

At the northern tip within the fence is a rectangular, approximately 3 × 3.70 meter , open pavilion with a flat, pyramidal roof supported by four square pillars . The pavilion dates from the mid-19th century and is a rarely preserved example of Greek Revival architecture of this type.

history

The park was Gainesville's social hub in the mid-19th century. It served as a meeting place for various events such as concerts , celebrations or town meetings . At the time, the park was surrounded by one- and two-story commercial buildings, including an Alabama State Bank branch on State Street on the west side. Northeast on the corner of McKee and Yankee Street near the river stood the American House Hotel , built during the Flush Times in the 1830s . The pavilion, which is first shown on a Sanborn map from 1884 , was probably built in the 1840s or 1850s . The current fence and water point in the southern area probably date to the late 19th century.
