Gaius Licinius Macer Calvus
Gaius Licinius Macer Calvus (* 82 BC ; † 47 BC ) was an orator and poet in the Roman Republic .
He was a son of Gaius Licinius Macer , a member of the gens Licinia and a friend of the poet Catullus , whose style and subject matter he followed. Calvus' style of speech corresponded to the Attic model and was thus opposed to the Asian school; he even characterized Cicero's style as verbose and artificial. 21 speeches are mentioned, including some against Publius Vatinius .
As a neotericist , he wrote the epic Io as well as elegies and epigrams .
Calvus seems to have been short, since Catullus (c. 53) called him salaputium disertum (eloquent Lilliputian ).
