The Gallery M - Art in urban areas is a municipal gallery in Berlin 's Marzahn-Hellersdorf .

history

In 1984, Galerie M was opened on the ground floor of the Marzahner Promenade 44 residential building under the direction of Gunter Nimmich. On August 30, 1990, the gallery building designed by Wolf-Rüdiger Eisentraut was opened at the Marzahner Promenade 13. In 2008, a new gallery management under Karin Scheel was installed. In 2011, Galerie M moved to Marzahner Promenade 46, as the gallery building showed significant structural defects. In 2014 the gallery building at Marzahner Promenade 13 was demolished.

activity

Galerie M is the only municipal gallery in the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district. The specifics of the district are an important aspect of the gallery work. The basis for this is the opening of the gallery towards the public space and, of course, the residents of the large estate. Their inclusion in various art projects creates a dimension of artistic work that is almost impossible with classical exhibitions. The participation of the residents is encouraged both in the active and in the passive area.

When selecting the artists, very high demands are placed on artistic professionalism. Groups of artists who cooperate with partners from different genres or branches of science also have a podium here.

All artists in the respective exhibitions are united by the thematization of urban issues. In order to take into account the special urban situation of Marzahn-Hellersdorf, part of the exhibitions is the essence of long-term art projects in the large estate and is partly accompanied by temporary art events in public or virtual space. The exhibitions are therefore always unique, developed for and with the specific location and expand the classic gallery work in terms of contemporary art development.

The long-term nature of the art projects enables the artists to deal intensively with the topics relevant to the respective exhibition. The gallery does not see itself as a mere presentation of fine art, but as a platform for discussion of social and artistic issues.

The orientation of the artistic work on the one hand strengthens the identification of the residents of Marzahn-Hellersdorf, on the other hand an art location that is unique in comparison to Berlin has been created.

The exhibition is supplemented by a permanent art education program for children and young people, as well as various events, discussion evenings, artist talks, performances, etc.

Art in public space

In addition to the exhibitions and accompanying art projects, Galerie M initiates art projects in public spaces. Since 2010, three temporary art events have taken place on the Marzahner Promenade every year. This project is supported by the district commission for art in public space (Galerie M is the office of the commission) and financed by funds from the Active Center Marzahner Promenade program. The classic art-in-building processes (artistic competitions) for new buildings in the district are also carried out from here.

Studio program

Galerie M is the contact for the Marzahn-Hellersdorf studio program. In cooperation with various housing associations, vacant commercial spaces are rented to professional artists at low cost.
