from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The gallery Smend is a gallery for textile art in Cologne . It was founded in 1973 by Rudolf G. Smend, who is still in charge today.

history

The Smend Gallery specializes in textile art and exhibits international textile artists. After the trained business graduate Rudolf Smend undertook a trip through the Middle East, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Malaysia to Indonesia in 1972, he opened a batik gallery a year later in Cologne's Südstadt (Mainzer Straße) . During his trip he took courses with batik artists himself, visited the small handicraft businesses and studied the various techniques and collected valuable fabrics of all kinds. He came back to Cologne with many of these hand-made textiles and works of art in his luggage. In 1973, the same year it opened, it exhibited on the “1. International Art Market ”, today's Art Cologne , made its batik fabrics.

Exhibitions

The big breakthrough came in 2000 with the large exhibition "Batiks from royal courts and sultan's palaces from Java and Sumatra", which took place in the old Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum and was put together by the Smend Gallery. In total, the gallery has shown more than 250 exhibitions and published 15 books and extensive catalogs.
