Gallery method

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The gallery method is a creativity technique for solving problems . It represents a combination of individual and group work. The name arises from the fact that the results of the participants are hung up in the course of the method like in a gallery and are visible to all. The rules for group formation and behavior correspond to those of brainstorming .

The method is suitable for groups in which both laypeople and professionals are present. It is helpful for problems that are to be solved by successively excluding unsuitable approaches and at the same time inserting new ideas in order to find a compromise . The method proves to be particularly effective in the case of design problems, because the solutions presented are clearly presented and can be arranged sensibly.

method

The solution is found in successive phases. The duration of the individual phases is determined in advance.

  1. In the introductory phase, the group leader presents the problem and gives an explanation
  2. In the idea generation phase I , each participant designs their own, unprejudiced solution and outlines it.
  3. In the association phase, all individual suggestions are hung up like in a "gallery" and discussed together. The purpose is for the participants to inspire each other through their ideas. This is also where the first sorting out takes place, whereby individual ideas can be integrated into the other solutions.
  4. The new findings lead to an individual re-evaluation and refinement of the remaining solutions in the idea generation phase II .
  5. In the final selection phase, the group sifts through all new ideas and selects the most practicable solutions.

A definitive decision should not and cannot yet be made, as further instances often have to be passed through. It's all about the exhaustion of creative solutions.

example

The risk of injury to a production plant should be minimized without reducing the efficiency of the production process. The “lay people” are the workers who are concerned about their health, the “professionals” are the technicians and business administrators who have an eye on the technical and financial feasibility.

It is assumed that both parties complement each other because they have different levels of experience. The workers can assess more quickly whether the danger will decrease, the technicians recognize the logistical and material problems early on, and the business administrators argue from an economic perspective. In the decision-making process, the occupational physicians and safety officers will finally play a role.
