Gallows tower
A gallows tower is a brick tower on which executions were carried out with a gallows in the Middle Ages and on which the hanged man was often hung as a deterrent. The gallows as a sign of high jurisdiction was set up on a hill ( Galgenberg ) or at other prominent waypoints such as national roads, visible from afar .
The name is later also used for watchtowers near former execution sites, for example the Galgenturm Mellrichstadt .
