Galib Mammadov (born April 19, 1946 in Gəncə , Azerbaijani SSR ) is a versatile Azerbaijani composer who deals with both western and oriental musical and cultural influences in his work.

Life

Galib Mammadov was born in Gəncə (Azerbaijani SSR), which at that time still belonged to the Soviet Union. From Ganja he traveled regularly to Baku , the capital of Azerbaijan, to visit the Conservatory of Music there, where he was a student of the renowned Azerbaijani composer Fikret Amirov , until he finally moved to Baku and attended the Asaf-Zeynally Music Academy there. Here he studied music theory with Z. Stelnic, composition theory with the composer Xayyam Mirzazade and music literature with the music researcher Rena Farhadova. From 1969 to 1975 Mammadov attended the Uzeir Hajibevov Music Conservatory in Baku. Here he was u. a. Student of the composer Kara Karajev .

Mammadov's final exam "Bayaties", a vocal cycle for symphony orchestras and soloists with texts by the Azerbaijani poet Vagif Bayat, was premiered in 1975 by the Azerbaijani State Symphony Orchestra. In the following years Mammadov expanded his repertoire and composed many works in various genres while teaching at the music high school in Ganja.

In the 1990s Mammadov met the Norwegian writer Eivind Skeie and was invited to take part in several Norwegian-Azerbaijani music projects, such as: B. "the country we come from" (Norwegian: Landet vi kommer fra), "Askeladden" - music for Azerbaijani puppet theater -, "the mountain of dreams" (Norwegian: drømmenes fjell) - a cantata for children, which premiered in Ulsteinvik, Norway, as well as "Sommerland" and "Oratorium Albanum".

In 2002 Mammadov settled in Norway and worked as an organist first in Kristiansund and then in Kvinesdal. Here he composes new works, many of which are inspired by Norwegian nature, such as B. “Rafossen” (German: the Rafoss waterfall), “Våren er her” (German: Spring is here), “Høst på Frei” (German: Autumn in free), “Vals” (German: Waltz) and "Nostalgi" (German: nostalgia).

Mammadov is a versatile composer who draws much of his inspiration from his homeland Azerbaijan, which is shaped by a multitude of different cultures - here, for example, the European and Russian musical heritage meets Azerbaijani folk music with its oriental sounds.

Mammadov is also often inspired by the written word, drawing on both Western and Azerbaijani poetry. He is also familiar with the Christian cultural heritage and has written several psalms, of which “La den brenne” (Eng. :: Let it burn) is the best known. This psalm is sung in different languages all over the world.
