Galina Igorewna Schirschina (Russian Галина Игоревна Ширшина ; born May 12, 1979 in Alakurtti , Murmansk Oblast , USSR ) is a Russian politician and psychologist. She was the first female mayor of the city of Petrozavodsk from 2013 to 2015 .

Life

Galina Schirschina was born on May 12, 1979 as the daughter of a military man and a teacher in the village of Alakurtti. In 1984 the family moved to Petrozavodsk.

Since 1997 she studied at the Psychological Faculty of the Karelian State Pedagogical University in Petrozavodsk. In 1999 she was elected chairwoman of the university's student council for five years. In 2001 she finished her studies as a practical psychologist. She started working as an assistant at the chair for psychology. In 2003 she started teaching there as a lecturer. In 2004 she won a national student guide competition.

In that year she began to work in political projects of the Yabloko party . During the election campaign, she supported their candidates with psychological training.

In 2005 Galina Schirschina became head of the university's student affairs department. In 2007 she received her doctorate from the Faculty of Developmental Psychology of the State Pedagogical Heart University of St. Petersburg . In 2010 she was appointed lecturer at the Karelian State Pedagogical Academy at the Chair of Pedagogical Psychology.

Political career

In September 2013, she was elected as the opposition candidate for the first female mayor of Petrozavodsk. It replaced the unpopular predecessor of the United Russia party. At the beginning of her term of office, she promised transparent administration. She regularly informed the citizens of the city about her activities. She campaigned for an increase in wages and salaries in the city, lowered the prices for local public transport and was able to significantly reduce the city's cost deficit in the first year. She created an internet platform for the concerns of the citizens and a fund for abandoned animals.

In December 2015, she was removed from office by the city parliament's deputies with immediate effect. Her appeals to various courts up to the Supreme Court of Russia were unsuccessful. Galina Schirschina has been an advisor to the new chairwoman of the Yabloko party, Emilia Slabunowa , since 2016 . She was one of ten candidates on the party's state list for the 2016 Duma elections.
