Supreme Court of the Russian Federation
The Supreme Court of the Russian Federation ( Russian Верховный Суд Российской Федерации ) is a court within the Russian judiciary and the highest court within Russian administrative , civil and criminal law . It also oversees the work of lower courts. Its predecessor was the Supreme Court of the USSR and the Supreme Court of the Russian Soviet Federal Socialist Republic (RSFSR) until 1992 .
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on February 6, 2014 creating a Unified Supreme Court, which meant the union of the Supreme Court and the Supreme Arbitration Court of the Russian Federation.
Chairman
On July 26, 1989 Vyacheslav Lebedev was appointed by a decree by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet to chairman of the Supreme Court of the RSFSR and confirmed on July 28, 1989 by the Supreme Soviet of the USSR . After the fall of the Soviet Union, Vyacheslav Lebedev has been chairman of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation since 1992. Lebedev was last re-elected in 1999, 2007 and 2012. On May 2, 2014, after the unification of the Supreme Court and the Supreme Arbitration Court of the Russian Federation, he was re- elected chairman of the Federation Council .
Judgments
On December 28, 2021, the Russian Supreme Court passed a ruling that banned the human rights organization “Memorial” and its regional organizations.
