The former limestone quarry nature reserve near Eichhof is a nature reserve in the Eichhof district of the municipality of Kürten in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis .

description

On the south-eastern slope of a meadow valley near the stream, the protected area encompasses a species-rich field wood , which ends on the northern edge with the ivy-covered , low-height rock wall of a former limestone quarry .

Vegetation and protection

The herbaceous layer in the previously more thinned stand, which was dominated by the hornbeam ( carpinus betulus ), indicates the woodruff beech forest as a potential natural vegetation. The value of the nature reserve relates in particular to its function as a habitat of the field trees for herbaceous plants and the biotope network as a stepping stone for the vegetation of the beech forests in the Paffrath limestone basin .

The protection serves to preserve and restore the so-called lime slope forest Steinbüchel with its high biodiversity and regional importance as a stepping stone biotope . The protection takes place in particular because of its lark spur occurrence . The following protection purposes are specified in detail:

  • Preservation and development of the hillside forest as a habitat for endangered and rare plant species, especially geophytes and adapted plant species on calcareous soils,
  • Preservation and securing of a part of the landscape of a limestone quarry with crevices, quarries and limestone soils as valuable rare ecological special locations.
