The Große Dhünntalsperre nature reserve is a nature reserve in the north of the municipality of Kürten in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis along the Große Dhünntalsperre . It begins northwest of Knappstockberg and runs through Müllenberg , Richerzhagen , Viersbach , Eisenkaul , Meißwinkel , Weiden , Hutsherweg , Dhünnberg , Wolfsorth and Laudenberg to the city limits of Wermelskirchen .

description

The area includes the southern slopes of the Great Dhünntalsperre in the municipality of Kürten, covered with beech forests . Numerous spring streams flow down to the valley on the slopes . The southern extension of the area mostly extends to the end of the wooded areas. An exception is the area east of Richerzhagen, where a source area characterized by wet grassland is included in the biotope . There is also riparian tall herb -Feuchtbrachen. The entire area appears spatially and functionally as a unit with the water body of the Great Dhünntalsperre. This is also made clear by the inflowing source streams, which are often connected to the dam's water body via reservoirs . In addition, the hillside forests take on an important soil protection function for the dam.

Vegetation and protection

The protection designation was carried out for the purpose of preserving, developing and optimizing the communities near the banks of near-natural stream floodplain forests and source areas with a gradual conversion of coniferous wood stocks into ecologically more valuable mixed forest and hardwood stocks .

The individual protection purposes are as follows:

  • Maintaining and securing the protected biotopes, which are breakage , marsh and swamp forests , swamps , reeds , sedge and bins rich wet fields, tall sedge , source areas as well as natural and semi-natural areas flowing and standing inland waters.
  • Securing the function as a supra-regional biotope network area of outstanding importance,
  • Preservation and development of the multi-segmented landscape area in its special character and outstanding beauty and importance for recreation,
  • Ensuring the importance and function for the groundwater recharge and water quality for the drinking water reservoir Große Dhünntalsperre .
