The St Olave's Church in York is a parish of the Church of England . It is located in Marygate at St Mary's Abbey and is a Grade I listed building .

history

St Olave's Church is within the walls of St Mary's Abbey, which were destroyed in the dissolution of the English monasteries . It is dedicated to Olav II. Haraldsson , the patron saint of Norway . The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle reports in the year 1055: “That year Siward, Earl of Northumbria died in York; and his body lies in the cathedral of Galmanho, which he himself in the name of God and St. Olave erected and consecrated to the glory of God and all his saints ”.

Galmanho is an ancient name for the area in which the church stands and it is believed that Siward had his residence here in York. It is the first mention of a church dedicated to Olaf.

St Olave's Church was extensively rebuilt in the 15th century. Extensive repairs were carried out in the 1720s, including the insertion of windows in the north aisle, the wall of which had previously served as part of the abbey and later as part of the city fortifications. The church was renovated from 1848–1849 and opened to the public on February 14, 1849.

The church was renovated again from 1887. After being closed for 5 weeks, the church reopened on September 2, 1888. The lath and plaster ceiling that covered the central aisle of the nave was removed. The columns, arches and north and west walls were stripped of paint and plaster. A new choir was added in 1887–1889 by George Fowler Jones, a York architect, and expanded in 1906. This contains the east window from the 15th century. Despite these changes, the architectural style is largely that of the 15th century.
