Rabban Gamaliel III. ( Hebrew רבן גמליאל ברבי; † 235 ) was a Jewish patriarch of the 3rd century AD from 217 to 235.

Life

He was the son of the famous Yehuda ha-Nasi , the chief editor of the Mishnah , with whom the era of the Tannaites came to a splendid conclusion, and was appointed by him as his successor in the patriarchate (Ket 103b).

Gamaliel III. continued his father's literary work, the editing of the Mishnah was completed under his direction, some of his sayings are also preserved there ( Proverbs of the Fathers II, 2-4).

The first quote says:

"Thorough study in connection with secular occupation and good manners is nice ..."

The second quote warns:

“Be careful with those in power because they only attract people for their own benefit; they appear like friends at the time of their use, but do not stand by the person at the time of his need. "

The third quote recommends:

“Do his will like your will, so that he may do your will like his will. Thwart your will from his will, so that he thwart the will of others from your will. "

One grave in Bet Shearim named R. Gamaliels next to another named R. Simeons could be his as well as his brother's.
