The Gambia National Party (GNP) was a political party in The Gambia .

history

The Gambia National Party was founded in the British colony of Gambia in July 1957 by a small number of educated citizens in Bathurst (then name of Banjul ). The party's leadership was under EJ Samba, a radical-minded trader; Melvin B. Jones , a journalist with critical anti-colonial views; J. W. Bidwell-Bright, a senior businessman ; and Kebba W. Foon , Chartered Accountant and President of the GNP. Several members of the party leadership founded the newspaper The Vanguard in 1958 , the content of which was very much oriented towards the party.

Although the GNP could not find broad popular support, it nevertheless took part in the deliberations on the drafting of the constitution under Governor Edward Henry Windley , which came into force before the general elections in British Gambia in 1960 . The party leaders quarreled over this and the party split.

Jones ran as a non-party in the 1960 election and the GNP disbanded.
