Games Slayter

Russell Games Slayter (born December 9, 1896 in Argos (Indiana) , † October 15, 1964 ) was an American inventor, known for the introduction of glass fibers. "Fiberglass" and glass fiber reinforced plastic .

Slayter graduated from Purdue University in 1921 with a degree in chemical engineering . In 1931 he went to the Owens-Illinois glass factory in Toledo, Ohio , where he and Dale Kleist and Jack Thomas developed stream blowing as a method for the mass production of glass fibers. At that time they were mainly used to insulate houses, and later also to reinforce plastic laminates . In 1938, Slayter became vice president of research for the newly formed Owen-Corning Fiberglass Corporation and remained so until he retired in 1963.

He held over 90 patents in fiber optic technology.

He received many prizes, including the 1948 IRI Medal . He has honorary doctorates from Purdue University and Ohio State University and a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science .
