Gamma Gruis , also gamma Gruis , γ Gruis or γ Gru ( Bayer designation ), is about 200 light-years from the sun distant star in the southern sky in the constellation Crane . It has an apparent magnitude of +3.01 mag and belongs to the spectral class B8III.

The proper name Aldhanab (spelling according to IAU ) goes back to the historical star name (from Arabic الذنب, DMG al-ḏanab  'the tail').
