Ganda-Koy
The Ganda-Koy (also Ghanda-Koy, Ganda-Koi and Ghanda-Koy) were a self-defense organization of the sedentary Africans of the southern edge of the Sahara to protect against attacks by nomadic Tuareg and criminal cattle thieves. Founded in 1994 and discredited because of a number of attacks and murders by unarmed Tuareg and Mauritanians, self-disarmament and reintegration into civil life took place in 1996.
In 2012 it was revived as the "Ganda-Koy Nouvelle Génération" of the Songhai . Their headquarters are in Mopti . Ganda-Koy is currently building new military structures to counter the expansion of the Tuareg militias from Azawad . Because of their origin, they have the tacit support of the remaining Malian army (the Tuareg rebels who were integrated into the army in 1996 deserted with weapons and equipment in the run-up to the current fighting) and can rely on ethno-professional networks in Mali's neighboring countries .
In July 2012, Ganda-Koy succeeded in founding the anti-fundamentalist Forces Patriotiques de Résistance (FPR) with other self-defense militias, which was also joined by moderate Tuareg organizations.
The Ganda-Koy have around 2,000 fighters under the leadership of Harouna Touré.
