The all-day elementary school in Köhlergasse (the "Hollein School") is an elementary school in the 18th district of Vienna, which is primarily known for its architectural uniqueness. The address of the school is Köhlergasse  9. The school was built on the site of an almost 100-year-old school building between 1977 and 1990 according to the plans of Hans Hollein , because they wanted to build a school with all-day operation: Köhlergasse was one of the first such schools in Vienna .

The construction

The old school building on the corner of Gentzgasse and Köhlergasse was only demolished in the second construction phase - during the first phase of construction work could still take place in the old schoolhouse. The old trees should also be preserved. First the north and west wing were built, then the south part in the second construction phase.

Architectural features

The building is based on the Währing building scheme: While the lower, southern part of the school looks like a townhouse when viewed from Gentzgasse, the turrets and open spaces in the northern part are reminiscent of the villas in the cottage district . In the northern wing there are the doctor's and teachers' rooms, the management office, classes and leisure rooms. In the south wing are the gym, the work rooms, the music room and the library, a garage, the school caretaker's apartment and classroom. An auditorium and a dining room connect the two parts of the school. A special feature of the architecture is that there is a relatively large amount of outdoor space to move around on the small, steep property: an open-air gym was built above the gym, and there are several terraces and small courtyards. There is even an open-air classroom for the children. The shape of the building looks playful and is reminiscent of a fairytale castle.

classes

The elementary school Köhlergasse is a "real" all-day school ; Participation in lessons from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. is mandatory for all children. Study and practice hours or free time alternate in the timetable. Each class has two teachers who are supported by trained leisure teachers in the afternoons and in various activities. The longtime director Edeltraud Weber retired in 2004. Weber was known beyond the district for her commitment to the school. From 2004 to 2012 the school was headed by Ulrike Molodczak. In September 2012 Michaela Judtmann took over the management of the school. There are ten elementary school classes in Köhlergasse.
