Gari tellinella is a type of mussel from the sand mussel family(Psammobiidae).

features

The large, equally hinged case is up to 65 millimeters long. It is elongated-elliptical in outline, the length / width ratio is about 1.5 to 1.7. It is moderately puffed up with a height to thickness ratio of 1.9 to 2.1. The housing is unequal, the vertebrae sit in front of the center line (40 to 42% of the length of the housing). There is a slight gap at both the front and rear ends.

The only very slightly arched to straight anterior dorsal margin drops steeply to the tightly rounded anterior end. The slightly longer posterior dorsal edge is straight and slopes slightly flatter towards the posterior end, which is set off from the dorsal edge by a very flat angle. The rear end is truncated slightly at an angle. The transition from the rear end to the ventral edge is tightly rounded. The ventral margin is well rounded.

The ligament is external, it extends for about 20% of the length of the casing behind the vertebrae. The lock of the two flaps has two cardinal teeth each, lateral teeth are missing. In the right valve, the anterior, moderately large cardinal tooth is larger than the posterior cardinal tooth, the posterior cardinal tooth is slightly split at the tip. In the left valve, the anterior cardinal tooth is slender and slightly split or two-pointed at the tip, while the posterior cardinal tooth is thin. The surface line is deeply indented, the U-shaped bay extends below the eddy. The line of the jacket bay coincides with the jacket edge at the lower edge over 70 to 83% of the length. The two sphincters leave clear scars in the shell.

The shell is thick-walled. The surface shows fine concentric growth strips. The inside edge of the housing is smooth. The color of the shell (outside) is variable, from yellowish-white, orange, pink, chestnut brown or matt red. arranged in contrasting ribbons, often still with rays of red and maroon. The inside is glossy white, yellowish, orange or reddish brown. The periostracum is light brown to dark brown. It is almost always eroded away in the middle part of the case and the vertebrae and mostly only preserved at the edges of the case. and silky gloss. The surface is tinted purple, sometimes concentrated in bands parallel to the edge with radial light brown bands.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The range of the species extends along the west coast of America from the Gulf of California to Ecuador. The animals live in moderately shallow water.

Taxonomy

The taxon was scientifically described by Gérard Paul Deshayes . It is rated as a valid taxon of the genus Gari by both Eugene Coan and MolluscaBase .
