Location and description

Ship landing stage on Garinish

The island has a size of about 15 hectares and is characterized by its gardens and the diversity of trees and shrubs. The gardens were created around 70 years ago in collaboration between the then owner Annan Bryce and the architect and landscape gardener Harald Peto . The island became the property of the state in 1953. On official maps the island is called Garinish, as it is internationally known. The other name - Ilnacullin ("Island of the holly") - is probably older.

The island can be reached by private ferry from Glengarriff. A visit is possible in the summer months, otherwise by appointment. You have to pay separate fees for the crossing and for the entrance fee. The crossing leads past seal banks.

climate

Garinish is sheltered in Bantry Bay and under the warming influence of the Gulf Stream . The climate is almost subtropical . The winters are mild, frosts are short and weak, and the amount of precipitation is quite high.

Division of the island

The island is divided into different themed areas, which can be visited on a circular route.

  • The lawn discounts
  • The classic style Italian garden with a small garden shed
  • The cedar garden
  • The bog bed
  • The Greek temple
  • The valley of happiness
  • The jungle
  • The Martello Tower
  • Walled garden
  • Hard court
  • Small valley

Origin of the gardens

When the Bryce family bought the island in 1910, Garinish was just a barren rock, the earth was thin and very peaty. So humus was brought in from the mainland and a windbreak made of conifers was planted around the island. Only then was it possible to implement Harald Peto's plans.
