Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park

The Garuda-Wisnu-Kencana-Kulturpark ( Indonesian : Taman Budaya Garuda Wisnu Kencana ) or GWK for short is a cultural park in the south of the Indonesian island of Bali . It is approximately a 10-15 minute drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport . The park is dedicated to the deity Wisnu (known elsewhere as Vishnu ) and his mount Garuda . Garuda is a national landmark and forms the coat of arms of Indonesia . The park is a mixture of sculptures, gardens and cultural performances.

The different areas of the park

In the center of the park is the largest contiguous outdoor area in the park, known as the Lotus Pond . It is bordered by large, vertically rising limestone walls, which are themselves a natural spectacle. Several times a year the site serves as a venue for large events and concerts with up to 7000 visitors.

At the end of the “Lotus Pond” there is a staircase that visitors can use to get to the Garuda Plaza . Here is a sculpture of the head of Garuda, a creature from mythology, which is a bird with partly human features. Garuda symbolizes strength, power and fighting spirit, but also loyalty, trust and willingness to make sacrifices. The head was originally intended as part of the large statue and was initially only to be exhibited temporarily. However, after years of delay in building the large statue, the head had become so important that it was decided to recreate it for the large statue.

Right next to the "Garuda Plaza" is the Wisnu Plaza area , on which the head and top of the divinity Wisnu are exhibited. The sculpture has a height of around 20 m and was also completed before the construction stop. The "Wisnu Plaza" represents the highest point of the park area. At certain times of the day, traditional Balinese art is performed on the "Wisnu Plaza", with the statue as a background.

There are also several gardens on the site. The "Indraloka Garden" is named after the god Indra and is used for smaller and larger events, such as weddings, due to its wonderful view.

To the north of the park are the amphitheater and the street theater, where shows of cultural dances are presented. The park's culinary offerings and numerous souvenir shops are also located in this area. In the entrance area of the park is the Tirtha Agung area with a sculpture of Wisnu's hands. The story of Garuda Wisnu Kencana is told on a wall . It ranges from the birth of Garuda to the ride of the god Vishnu.

In the south of the complex you can see the huge Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue , which was completed in 2018 and towers over everything with a height of 120 m.
