Life

His books deal primarily with scientific controversies: for example, he critically examined the Nobel Prize-winning work of the physicist Carlo Rubbia and analyzed the claim by the scientists Pons and Fleischmann to have detected cold nuclear fusion in 1989.

Good calories, bad calories

In this work, Taubes argues that certain types of carbohydrates - and by no means fats or just excess calories - are responsible for the increased incidence of obesity in the population.

Taubes argues that the regulation of adipose tissue by insulin and its importance for obesity has so far been neglected and supports his view with the observation that the introduction of refined carbohydrates into the diet of traditional societies has led to an increase in so-called diseases of civilization such as obesity and heart disease.

Why We Get Fat: And What To Do About It

Taubes emphasizes in this book that the hypothesis that obese people are responsible for their lot because they overeat and did not move enough falls short. Rather, due to the human past as a hunter-gatherer, a genetic response to carbohydrates ingested with food is preserved: namely, the release of insulin, which is overstimulated by modern diets that are rich in refined sugar and thus can cause obesity.
