Gary Taylor (Linguist)

Gary Taylor (born 1953 ) is the George Matthew Edgar Professor of English at Florida State University . He is one of the editors of The Oxford Shakespeare series and the Oxford University Press edition of Thomas Middleton's works .

Life

Taylor graduated from the University of Kansas and received her PhD from the University of Cambridge . He worked with Stanley Wells from 1978 to 1986 on the publication of the Oxford Shakespeare Edition. He has lectured at Oxford University , the Catholic University of America , Brandeis University (where he was Head of the English Language Department) and the University of Alabama . From 1995 to 2005 he directed the "Hudson Strode Program" for studies on the Renaissance . In 2005 he was appointed to the English Language Department at Florida State University . There he heads the interdisciplinary program "History of Text Technologies". Taylor has done research on Shakespeare , | Middleton, early modern culture, canon building, ethnocentrism, and androcentrism. He is best known for his work on "New Bibliography", for which he has received grants from the Folger Shakespeare Library , the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation . Taylor has worked with John Lavagnino for many years on the publication of The Collected Works of Thomas Middleton , which was published by Oxford University Press in 2007.
