Gascoynes Scarlet is a variety of the apple ( Malus domestica ). She was bred by Gascoynes in Sittingbourne . The original name is 'Gascoynes Scarlett Seedling'. The variety was traded in the Geo Bunyard nursery in 1871 and came to Germany before 1883.
description
The medium-strong and sparse tree forms diagonally upright leading branches that later stand horizontally. They are densely branched and form a broad, rounded crown. The variety is moderately susceptible to powdery mildew and highly susceptible to scab , fruit rot, leaf mosaic virus, and fruit tree cancer .
The flowers develop terminally on short shoots that are on two-year long shoots. The flowers are sensitive to frost and weather.
The medium to large fruit is 75 mm wide and 60 mm high and weighs 145 grams. The smooth, greasy and hard shell is yellowish green in color and marbled from light purple to cloudy carmine. The greenish white to reddish white flesh is firm, fine-celled, juicy, sour-sweet and has a lightly perfumed aroma. It is ready to be picked at the end of September and it is ready for consumption from October to December. The apple can only be stored for a short time and is suitable for fresh consumption and domestic processing.
