history

In 1850 , William Heath Davis , originally from San Francisco , bought a piece of land right on the waterfront, at the beginning of what is now Market Street, in order to continue urban development there. However, it failed in the wake of an economic depression.

In 1867, Alonzo Horton continued Davis' idea and bought around 325 hectares at auction for about $ 0.81 / hectare in order to build a new inner city on the site. So in 1869 he built a new wharf for $ 50,000, which formed the backbone of a rapidly developing city.

Since the 1880s, the Gaslamp Quarter developed into an entertainment district with numerous bars, brothels and amusement arcades (three of which were owned by Wyatt Earp ), which was also known under the name Stingaree .

From 1974 onwards an investment program of private and public donors started to preserve the historical character of the quarter and to revive it.

Attractions

The architecture of the historic buildings is known for its Victorian style. Hence the name of the district, which is based on the numerous, style-typical gas lamps .

The Gaslamp Quarter is also home to a variety of bars, shopping, hotels, nightclubs, and restaurants, as well as the San Diego Convention Center and Petco Park , home of the San Diego Padres Major League Baseball team .
