Pacific Beach (mostly just called PB by the residents ) is a coastal district of San Diego , 10 km north of downtown San Diego . It has about 40,000 inhabitants.

geology

Pacific Beach is bordered by Mission Beach and Mission Bay to the south, La Jolla to the north, and Clairemont to the east . The main street in Pacific Beach, Garnet Avenue , leads to the Crystal Pier , built in 1927 , on which there is a hotel with bungalows. The district is known for its surfing scene , which can be seen on Tourmaline and Law Street Beaches . A 5 km long promenade with bike path ("Ocean Boulevard"), which is always very busy, runs along the wide beach from La Jolla to Mission Beach. Many of the streets leading east-west to the Pacific are named after gemstones (e.g. turquoise, sapphire, tourmaline, opal, beryl, chalcedony, diamond, emerald)

history

PB history began in 1885 with the completion of the railway line from the east coast to San Diego. Massive advertising campaigns by the railroad and chambers of commerce attracted a stream of immigrants who settled north of San Diego. Ramona, Del Mar, San Marcos, El Cajon, Lakeside and La Jolla are some of the places that emerged on the coast during this time. At the end of 1889 the "San Diego & Pacific Beach Railroad" was completed. It was not until 1906 that the "Los Angeles & San Diego Beach Railway" was connected, so that the entire stretch of coast was booming. In the 1920s PB still had 500 inhabitants, in the 1950s there were already around 30,000.

Sea World opened in 1964 and has since brought many tourists to the region.
