Otto Strasbourg
Heinrich Karl Otto Strasbourg (* 18th January 1862 in Kölleda ; † 22. May 1941 in Görlitz ) was a German textile - retail merchant in Goerlitz.
Life
The Strasbourg Passage , which he had built in Görlitz in 1907 and 1908 , is associated with his name . With this shopping arcade , a commercial row was created in Görlitz that was otherwise only found in large cities in a comparable form. Its construction was not without controversy at the time. There was talk of “megalomania”, but also that this architectural gem with its shops meets customer requirements for large, bright sales rooms and a rich selection. The passage is built entirely under the sign of Art Nouveau , includes two-storey atria and was reopened in 1997 after a thorough renovation .
The chronicle of the synagogue of Görlitz mentions that his company donated carpets and rugs for the interior decoration.
His simple family crypt with a granite cover can be found in the municipal cemetery in Görlitz. The marble grave slab is on the wall, above it is a relief-like lettering.
On May 4, 2019, a memorial plaque for Otto Strasbourg was unveiled in the floor of the entrance from Berliner Straße.
