Former Gasthaus Krone, street facade

The listed former Gasthaus Krone in the Sonnenberg district of Chemnitz is a largely original Wilhelminian-style inn with some interior details that are still present, which is also significant in terms of local history because of its long use as a cinema. Today it is used as a Christian youth center.

history

The "Krone" inn at Augustusburger Strasse 167 was one of the oldest inns in the city of Chemnitz . The predecessor of the current building, which was built in 1887, stood here before 1837. Around 1912 the hall was added with a splendid painted ceiling, and a bowling alley followed later. In the warm season, the adjacent coffee garden was also well visited. The inn was almost spared in the hail of bombs during World War II. Since many cinemas were also in ruins, the hall was used for film screenings and the "Krone Lichtspielhaus" was opened here on February 11, 1946, which was taken over by the state cinema in 1949 and later named "Weltecho". The large hall was not only used for film screenings, but also for other events (e.g. youth consecration celebrations).

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the state-owned movie theaters were taken over by the Treuhand and sold to a private cinema operator. The building later belonged to Ufa-Theater AG , which closed it in 1997 due to the steadily decreasing number of visitors and put the building up for sale. In 2000, the building was taken over by young Christians who expanded the old cultural monument into a public, non-denominational, Christian youth facility. The facility opened on September 14, 2008.
