Gasthaus zum Roten Ochsen

The Gasthaus Zum Roten Ochsen is one of the most traditional student restaurants in Heidelberg . The building is a listed building .

history

The building consists of two originally separate structures. The eastern house was built in 1703, the western one dates from 1724. In 1839 the complex was acquired by Albrecht Spengel, who united the two houses, with the western part being increased in 1840, and furnished the Red Ox. The inn is now run by the sixth generation of the Spengel family.

The Rote Ochse is located in the eastern half of Hauptstrasse , the most important street in Heidelberg's old town . The western part of the building has three storeys with baroque ear windows and a gable roof. The name of the inn is written in a stucco field. The eastern part has two floors and a mansard roof. There is a stucco medallion with an ox's head between the windows. The interior has been kept original. In 2014, the archives of Heidelberg University began to catalog and preserve the numerous photos and testimonials of student life in order to preserve them for posterity. In addition to the historical furnishings with beer mugs and historical photographs, another special feature is the piano playing every evening with German folk songs and student songs .
