Notice board on the building

The Gasthaus zum Scharfen Eck is a listed building at Lucas-Cranach-Straße 2 in the Upper Franconian town of Kronach in Bavaria .

location

The building is located in the old town of Kronach (upper town), northeast of Melchior-Otto-Platz on the corner, on Lucas-Cranach-Straße, Strauer Torweg and the street Auf Schütt meet. No regular catering at the moment. Occasionally, events such as tastings (whiskey, gin, beer) have taken place here since 2019 and guest rooms are rented out for private parties.

history

The basement of the three-story saddle roof building dates from the late Middle Ages , the half-timbered second upper floor was added in the 16th century. The name Zum Scharfen Eck is not based on the corner location of the building, but comes from the name of a previous owner: In 1871 Mathilde Scharf, née von Renauld , bought the house in which her husband Friedrich Scharf set up a beer tavern.

The city of Kronach had a notice posted on the building in 1872, stating that it was the birthplace of the famous painter and graphic artist Lucas Cranach . However, this has now been refuted: Cranach's parents' house stood on the north side of the market square, where the city's new town hall has been located since the mid-1970s. Presumably, today's Gasthaus zum Scharfen Eck served the Cranach family as a residence for a time.
