Gasthaus zur Hundskugel

The Hundskugel was a traditional restaurant in Munich . It was located in one of the oldest still existing town houses. It is located in Munich's old town in the Hackenviertel at Hotterstrasse 18. The building was first documented in 1484/1485. It is a listed building . From 1983 until his murder in 2005, Rudolph Moshammer was the owner of the building and a regular at the inn. Moshammer bequeathed it to the city of Munich on condition that it be used for a social purpose. Other famous guests were Heinrich Heine , who temporarily lived in the nearby cycling house, Ignaz Günther , Roman Anton Boos and Franz Anton Bustelli . On May 31, 2011, the restaurant closed for economic reasons. The house was converted and operated by the Todenhöfer family's "Stiftung Sternenstaub" as a social meeting place.

designation

The name Hundskugel was derived from the house's sign and has been used since the 19th century .

Alexander Schöppner wrote in the saga of the Bavarian Lands in 1852 :

“The strange picture on the so-called dog ball in Munich was originally not on the house where it is now, but on the former bath house that forms the inner corner. Old people still think of the signage painted al fresco on this house, which was whitewashed only about fifty years ago, depicting a bowling alley in a pretty wood, on which a number (after a few nine) dogs were amusing themselves with bowling, while some were holding a plate holding sausages in their paws in front of them and, enjoying life with their mouths full, watching the comrades play. That is why the people liked to swap the name 'Hundskugel' with 'Hundskuchel' = dog kitchen. When this picture was destroyed, the artist Roman Boos replaced it with a wooden relief, on which the dogs were no longer occupied in the bowling alley, but rather jokingly depicted with a ball.
The people probably also told about that bullet and how it was dragged through Munich's streets by dogs, but was laid down at this house. Others wanted to interpret the painting differently. An old verse that was below it was: Until these nine cones encircle the dog, 'we can still heal many hours'. This verse referred to the bathing righteous in the house. "

The house at Hackenstrasse 10, where the house sign was originally located, is also a listed building as the Haus zur Hundskugel .
