The “Zum Hirsch” inn is a former traditional inn in the center of the southern Thuringian district town of Meiningen . The building on the market square opposite the town church still houses apartments and a shop with an Italian ice cream parlor as well as a gastronomic facility. The house is a listed building.

history

The “Zum Hirsch” inn is the second oldest documented inn in the city. It was first mentioned in 1490 in a document as the “Zum Braunen Hirsch” inn. The house has undergone numerous renovations in the course of its history. The current building was erected in the 17th century. In addition to an inn, it had guest rooms for overnight stays as well as stables and coach houses , which could be reached through a central gate in the building. From 1891 it was called the “Zum Hirsch” inn and also housed a post office and a commercial shop. In 1913 it was converted with a new mansard roof into the “Kaiserhof” hotel and restaurant. The building has been used as a commercial building since 1926.

Famous guests

As one of the best inns in town, the “Zum Hirsch” inn accommodated numerous well-known guests. Friedrich Schiller was a guest here in 1782 . 1792 stayed at the inn Alexander von Humboldt . During the autumn campaign of 1813 during the wars of liberation against Napoleon , who was in retreat , the inn was briefly the headquarters of the Prussian army. At the same time, Tsar Alexander I of Russia moved into his quarters here, and his troops set up camp at the gates of the city. Another famous guest was Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1815 .
