Gasthof "Zum Ritter"

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The “Zum Ritter” inn was a building in Rudolstadt in Thuringia , which existed from 1799/1801 to 2003.

history

In 1799 the construction of a new inn in Rudolstadt began, as the previous inn "Güldene Gabel" no longer met the requirements of the time. It was completed in 1801 and named after its first tenant Johann Christoph Ritter. There was a large hall, 23 rooms, as well as barns, stables, sheds and a slaughterhouse. The inn was the most modern in Thuringia in its time.

Concerts with well-known musicians such as Clara and Robert Schumann , Nicolo Paganini , Franz Liszt (1844) and Richard Wagner were held regularly in the hall . There were winter concerts with a buffet and ball and masked balls. Friedrich Schiller stayed here and the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer completed his dissertation in one of the guest rooms in 1813. The concert hall was also used by associations and societies in the city.

Since around 1850 the cultural importance of the inn has waned. A number of shops have been located there since 1890, and in 1908/1910 the hotel and concert hall were renovated and closed.

Since 1917 at the latest, the hall has been used for the knight light plays. These were closed around 1942 and reopened in 1947. In the 1950s or 1960s, they were renamed Activist Light Games .

In 1996 the cinema was closed and the building fell into disrepair. In 2003 it was demolished. Then the Galeria shopping center was built there.
