Gasthof Westerhüsen

The Gasthof Westerhüsen is a listed building in the Magdeburg district of Westerhüsen .

Location and architecture

The two-story building at the address Alt Westerhüsen 14 on the corner of Husumer Strasse was built as a residential building at the beginning of the 20th century and shows neo-baroque design elements. It represents a remnant of the Wilhelminian development on the main street of Westerhüsens. The plastered corner building has a tail gable over the entrance facing the main street . On the upper floor, the windows are each crowned with stucco decoration in baroque shapes. In the polygonal broken corner area there is a box bay on the upper floor , which emphasizes the corner position in a special way.

history

Initially, the innkeeper Alex Hoffmeier was the owner of the building, which had the address Schönebecker Straße 66 until the incorporation of Westerhüsens in 1910 . The neighboring buildings also had restaurants. To the north, on the other side of what was then Kanzlerstrasse, today's Husumer Strasse, was the restaurant Zum Deutschen Haus . Immediately to the south was the “Zum Anker” inn . Later in the 1920s, when Hoffmeier had died, his widow R. Hoffmeier initially ran the restaurant. In the 1930s, Franz Jahn ran the inn. However, the building belonged to the widow who then lived in Oschersleben . Jahn later took over the building.

During the Second World War , despite a bronze image of Hitler on the wall, the restaurant developed into a meeting place for French foreign and forced laborers in the area. In the restaurant they called Cafe "J'Hann" , a dark beer was served on the open market and billiards could be played. In addition, the Fahlberg-List chemical plant , where many of the forced laborers had to work, was directly opposite the restaurant. On one wall in the restaurant was a large map of Europe, which could be used to trace the course of the war. The French forced laborers described the landlord and landlady as friendly.

Jahn continued to run the inn after the Second World War. The two neighboring economies no longer existed at that time. At least in the time of the GDR until the 1990s, the restaurant was called Zur Quelle . It was run by Karl-Heinz Jordan . At the beginning of the 21st century, the traditional economy still existed under the name of Gasthof Westerhüsen . However, it is currently (as of 2011) closed.
